Bradley Caldwell Buys Loveland Pet

Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 4:45 p.m., EDT

In a deal closed yesterday, Bradley Caldwell Inc. of Hazelton, Pa., bolstered its pet product distribution business and expanded its geographic reach into the Midwest by acquiring Loveland Pet Products of Mason, Ohio. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Under the deal, BCI’s distribution area expands from 17 states (roughly Maine to Michigan to Virginia) to 26 states. The two distributors also expect to leverage their traditional strengths; although not new to the pet business, BCI has been especially strong in the lawn and garden, tack and feed, and farm-supply channels.

“Loveland Pet Products can use BCI’s expertise in the farm and home, lawn and garden, equine, wild bird and pond markets to expand its business in the Midwest,” said Jim Bradley, chief executive officer of BCI. “BCI can take advantage of Loveland’s expertise in the specialty pet marketplace.”

As part of the deal, Roger Johannigman, former owner and president of Loveland, became a vice president of Bradley Caldwell and will continue to manage the Mason, Ohio, distribution center under a long-term employment contract. Existing employees of the distribution center will remain in place to serve the Midwest market.

“This is a growth story as well as a chance to share best practices,” said Johannigman. “There is insignificant overlap of markets and resources, allowing for growth without cannibalization. Plus, we have the opportunity to share and build on the best of both family-owned companies that have formed similar cultures based on great service and strong customer relationships.” <HOME>
